Pinnacle Studio

Pinnacle Studio 21 is one of the most popular and best selling editing software programs around. With its clean look and feel, its superior performance, and its ease of use it is no wonder it outsells most brands. We have used this software as one of our primary editors for years. As it has gone through its several progressions we have seen great growth in the product. This software will allow you to create videos which you will be proud of.

If you're looking for more in-depth information on the software check out the video review on our Product Reviews page.

Pinnacle Studio 21 Ultimate_User Interface.JPG

All software has an initial learning curve that must be dealt with. PS 21 does its' best to mitigate the curve with a new and improved interface. There are several changes to the interface which simplify things and help to speed up your work flow. The Organize and Author tabs have been removed in lieu of a Author DVD button and a SmartMovie button. The navigation bar has been replaced with icons. Library and Editor buttons allow you to toggle between the two. The Preview and Library window positions can be swapped. Windows can be detached and docked in different areas. Spend time familiarizing yourself with the new interface to make the most of the software and leverage all of its tools.

Were you looking to jump into the program and get your edit on? You can do that! Studio 21 basic has 6 timeline tracks, Plus has 24 timeline tracks and Ultimate has unlimited timeline tracks for editing. The more tracks you have the more flexibility you have when editing. With a click of the Add Track button or a right click on the Track information section users have the option to add additional tracks when necessary. This feature makes it easy to create composites and multi-layer effects. The Plus and Ultimate versions have a "Solo" button when accessing the editor which allows users to see multiple tracks and effects simultaneously.

The redesigned Editor in Pinnacle Studio 21 offers more control over your clips. It provides access to several options and effects that can now be added by line item with keyframes. You can add as many keyframes as you need to get the results you want. You can change properties such as position, size, rotation, transparency, and more. You can access the tabs at the top of the editor to make corrections, add effects, create pan and zooms, add transitions, and apply time remapping. Time remapping is a tool that allows you to ramp up or ramp down the speed of a clip using key frames which gives you more control over speed changes.

Multi-Camera Editor

Pinnacle Studio 21 adds a touch of professionalism to the program with its' new Multi-Camera Editor. The tool allows the user to import footage from up to six camera sources and two audio sources and sync them to one another. The user then selects which camera angles they want to show during the video. Everything runs smoothly with HD and 4K video clips due to the use of proxy files. While the multi-camera editor is doing its' thing it uses files with a lower resolution. When it is done it places the original HD or 4K files into the final file. This camera angle workhorse is a welcome addition to the Pinnacle Studio program.

Audio Ducking

Pinnacle Studio 21 Audio Ducking.jpg

Have you ever spent what seemed like an eternity lowering the volume of an audio track which was under an audio/video track full of a large amount of video clips with dialogue so that you could hear the person speaking over the music? Well, those days are in the past thanks to audio ducking. Yes my friends, gone are the days of finding where the dialogue begins and ends, adding volume keyframes to those points and lowering the volume. Audio ducking automatically lowers the audio of one track allowing the audio of another track to be heard more clearly. This new feature does it all for you. So go ahead and get low baby, get low.

Wide-Angle Lens Correction

When you shoot that footage with your GoPro camera you want it to look good. Pinnacle 21 comes with wide-angle lens distortion to fix that fish-eye look caused by most from wide angle action cameras and help your footage look great. Camera presets for most of the popular action cameras of today such as GoPro make it easy to straighten the horizon and make footage feel fluid with the rest of your movie. Lines that appear to be curved or angled can quickly be straightened with a few clicks. Removing distortion from wide angle action cameras is the first step to creating exciting action videos like the pros.

Title Editor / 3D Title Editor

When you're looking to say something with typed text Pinnacle Studio 21 has features that allow you to set up your own titles from scratch or use one of many templates to create motion titling, title designs, DVD menus, or montages. With a diverse selection of title animations, you are guaranteed to find the perfect look to complement your video. New in Pinnacle Studio 21 is the addition of 3D Titles. This allows you to create blockbuster style titles that are crisp, clean, and sharp as a tack. I have utilized almost every effect, menu, and title which has the ability to add titles to and I am impressed with the quality and ease of customization, so much so that I have hugged my computer on several occasions.

360 Video

Studio 21 has the latest in video technology. Support for all popular 360 spherical video formats, including equirectangular, fisheye and dual fisheye provide you with multiple ways to immersed your audience in all of the action. Simply import your 360 footage and start editing! Let your video take a surprising turn with new controls for 360 video editing. Edit 360 video, add titles, apply effects and output as 360-degree video to playback on your 360 media player or VR headset or convert 360 video to standard video to ensure your audience doesn’t miss the important moments. Edit your 360 video your way, in the formats your camera outputs.

Morph Transitions

Ever wanted to magically turn an apple into a soccer ball? Have you ever wanted to seamlessly switch your scene from one landscape into another? Morph transitions will help all of those editing dreams come true. This feature helps you create fantastic transitions between clips. With morph transitions Studio 21 can transform a single image, shape or sequence and make cuts or transitions between scenes that look smooth and true to life. Using the morph transition tool is extremely simple. Create nodes around the part of the video that you want to morph into another video, do the same thing on the next clip and Studio 21 takes care of the rest. Morph transitions work best between clips that have similar reference points.

Motion Tracking

Pinnacle Studio 21 Motion Tracking.jpg

If you need to follow an object across the screen or blur out an object then the motion tracking feature in Studio 21 is the perfect tool for you. It allows you to track an object and add a mosaic blur to sensor or obscure a face, license plate, logo or more. Support for multi-point motion tracking lets you track multiple points of an object for greater precision as it approaches or moves away from your lens. Add moving text or graphics to track players in a sporting event, or draw attention to particular guest in a room full of people. Mark your object, press play to track its motion and then easily add the overlay of your choice.

Split Screen

Creating split screen videos took a lot of work in previous versions of Pinnacle Studio. The geniuses over at Corel hooked us up by making this task extraordinarily simpler with the introduction of the spilt screen editor. This tool allows you to show multiple video streams simultaneously within the same video. There are two tools that be can used to accomplish this. Split screen templates or the split screen editor. With templates you can drag and drop assets into templates. With the editor you can create your own templates. This tool helps you create impressive videos for your family, friends, and clients.

Paint Effects

Pinnacle Studio 21 Paint Effects.jpg

Those of you who missed some of the cartoon effects of old such as Red Giant Toonit and NewBlueFX Cartoonr will be pleased as punch to find that Pinnacle Studio 21 comes with Paint Effects. This tool can be used to transform your video into a storybook-like motion animation. There are five artistic paint filters to choose from. Just drag and drop the appropriate filter of your choice to your video clips to add cartoon, oil-painting, or stencil-like stylized effects to create the next big animation.  Drag and drop filters to add cartoon or watercolor-like stylized effects to create the next big animation.

Save Template As

Pinnacle Studio 21 Save As Template.jpg

Tired of creating the same old video timeline over and over again to use for your video series? The ability to save your finished projects as templates allows you to fast-track future work and ensures that you never have to create that same old series timeline again. When your project is done, go to ‘File > Save Movie as Template’ and easily replace media with placeholders. The great thing about this is the fact that you can put different videos into the placeholders to keep the same structure while creating a totally new look. This is a fantastic tool for creating standard intro and exits for your videos!

In the world of video the opposite of Import is Export. They are the Yin and Yang of editing and one is just as important as the other. With all of the options for exporting media it is obvious that the people at Corel understood this. The program has options to export movies as Flash, QuickTime, AVCHD, AVCHD2, Mpeg (1, 2, & 4), XAVC S, and other file formats all the way up to 4K Ultra HD resolution. The program can now export MP4 and MTS files at bitrates up to 100 Mbps. It also allows for export directly to the cloud, web sites such as Facebook®, YouTube®, and Vimeo®, multiple disc types, and devices such as PS4 and XBOX.

System Requirements

Now those who watch my YouTube videos know that I tell it like it is and Studio 21 does have its drawbacks. You may experience crashes every now and then even when using a computer which surpasses the minimum system requirements. I recommend making sure that your system meets the maximum requirements in order to get the best performance out of the software. Luckily Pinnacle Studio 21 does a phenomenal job of recovering projects from right where you left off when it crashed. If your computer meets the maximum system requirements make sure you have the latest patch in order to mitigate issues with the software.

So, why do I think so highly of Pinnacle Studio? I have used several consumer video editing programs and have basically tried them all. No matter which one I use or what features the others have I always come back to Pinnacle Studio. In my little ol' opinion Studio 21 is one of the best consumer level video editing software applications around. The ease of use, interface, features, effects, and price put it in a class by itself.
